Murgh Tikka Masala (chicken Tikka Masala)
Murgh Tikka Masala, also known as Chicken Tikka Masala, is a popular dish from Punjabi cuisine, known for its rich and creamy tomato-based sauce with tender pieces of marinated chicken. This recipe is a perfect blend of aromatic spices and flavors, making it a favorite among food enthusiasts.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs (700g) boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 1 1/2 cups tomato puree
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, ground cumin, ground coriander, turmeric, cayenne pepper, and salt. Add the chicken pieces and marinate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best results.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the marinated chicken pieces and cook until browned and cooked through. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside.
- In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed and sauté the chopped onion until golden brown. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Pour in the tomato puree and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the cooked chicken back into the pan.
- Stir in the heavy cream and garam masala. Simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice or naan bread.
