Murgh Tikka Masala (punjabi Chicken Tikka Masala)
Murgh Tikka Masala, also known as Punjabi Chicken Tikka Masala, is a popular dish from the Punjabi cuisine. It features tender pieces of marinated chicken cooked in a rich and creamy tomato-based sauce, infused with aromatic Indian spices.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs (700g) boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, ground cumin, ground coriander, garam masala, turmeric, cayenne pepper, and salt. Add the chicken pieces and coat them with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best results.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the marinated chicken pieces and cook until browned and cooked through. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside.
- In the same pan, add the butter and sauté the chopped onion and garlic until softened and golden brown.
- Stir in the tomato paste and cook for a few minutes. Then add the crushed tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Pour in the heavy cream and return the cooked chicken to the pan. Simmer for an additional 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves and serve hot with naan or steamed rice.
