Mustard Hilsa (spicy Shorshe Ilish)
Mustard Hilsa, also known as Spicy Shorshe Ilish, is a traditional Bengali dish that originates from the Sylheti Cuisine. This dish is famous for its rich and spicy mustard sauce that perfectly complements the tender and flavorful Hilsa fish.
Ingredients
- 4 Hilsa fish steaks
- 1/2 cup mustard paste
- 1/4 cup yogurt
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 green chilies, sliced
- 1/4 cup mustard oil
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the mustard paste, yogurt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt to make the marinade.
- Marinate the Hilsa fish steaks with the prepared marinade and let them sit for 15 minutes.
- Heat mustard oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the green chilies and sauté for a minute.
- Add the marinated Hilsa fish steaks to the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side.
- Pour water into the pan, add sugar, and cover it. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes.
- Once the fish is cooked and the sauce thickens, remove from heat.
- Mustard Hilsa is ready to be served hot with steamed rice.
