Mutta Curry (kodava Style Egg Curry)
Mutta Curry, also known as Kodava Style Egg Curry, is a traditional dish from the Kodava Cuisine of Karnataka, India. This flavorful and aromatic curry is made with hard-boiled eggs simmered in a rich and spicy coconut-based gravy. It is a popular dish in Kodava households and is often served with steamed rice or traditional rice rotis.
Ingredients
- 4 hard-boiled eggs
- 1 cup grated coconut
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 4-5 garlic cloves
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add cumin seeds, curry leaves, chopped onions, and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
- Add grated coconut, ginger, and garlic. Sauté until the coconut turns golden brown and aromatic.
- Now, add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a few minutes.
- Pour in 2 cups of water and bring the gravy to a gentle boil.
- Cut the hard-boiled eggs into halves and gently place them in the gravy. Simmer for 5-7 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.
- Once the curry reaches the desired consistency, remove from heat and serve hot with steamed rice or rice rotis.
