Nandu Masala (chettinad Crab Masala)
Nandu Masala, also known as Chettinad Crab Masala, is a flavorful and spicy dish from the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu, India. This dish is known for its rich blend of aromatic spices and is a popular choice for seafood lovers.
Ingredients
- 500g crab, cleaned and washed
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 3 tomatoes, pureed
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tbsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 4-5 dry red chilies
- 1-inch cinnamon stick
- 4-5 cloves
- 4-5 cardamom pods
- 1/2 cup chopped coriander leaves
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp oil
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan and add fennel seeds, cumin seeds, dry red chilies, cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. Sauté until fragrant.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few minutes.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Sauté for 2-3 minutes.
- Add tomato puree and cook until the oil separates.
- Add grated coconut and cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Add the cleaned crab, salt, and 1 cup of water. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until the crab is cooked through.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
