Nandu Masala (chettinad Crab Masala)

Ingredients

  • 500g crab, cleaned and washed
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 4-5 dry red chilies
  • 1-inch cinnamon stick
  • 4-5 cloves
  • 4-5 cardamom pods
  • 1/2 cup chopped coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add fennel seeds, cumin seeds, dry red chilies, cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. Sauté until fragrant.
  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few minutes.
  4. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add tomato puree and cook until the oil separates.
  6. Add grated coconut and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Add the cleaned crab, salt, and 1 cup of water. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until the crab is cooked through.
  8. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
