Nandu Masala, also known as Crab Masala, is a popular dish in Mangalurean Catholic Cuisine. This spicy and flavorful crab curry is a perfect accompaniment to steamed rice or neer dosa.

Nandu Masala (crab Masala)

Ingredients

  • 1 kg crab, cleaned and washed
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Few curry leaves
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • Coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and sauté the onions until golden brown.
  2. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few minutes.
  3. Now, add the tomato puree, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates.
  4. Add the crab pieces and mix well. Cook for 5 minutes.
  5. Pour in the coconut milk, garam masala, green chilies, and curry leaves. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the crab is cooked and the gravy thickens.
  6. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or neer dosa.
