Naniura (spicy Grilled Carp)
Naniura is a traditional Batak dish from Indonesia, made with grilled carp and a spicy seasoning. This dish is known for its bold flavors and is a popular choice for special occasions and family gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1 whole carp, cleaned and scaled
- 5 red chilies, finely chopped
- 3 shallots, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 tbsp lime juice
- Banana leaves for wrapping
Instructions
- Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
- In a bowl, mix together the red chilies, shallots, garlic, turmeric powder, salt, sugar, and lime juice to make the spicy seasoning.
- Cut slits into the carp and rub the spicy seasoning all over the fish, including inside the cavity.
- Wrap the seasoned carp in banana leaves, securing it with toothpicks.
- Grill the wrapped carp for about 10 minutes on each side, or until the fish is cooked through and the banana leaves are charred.
- Remove the carp from the grill and carefully unwrap the banana leaves.
- Serve the Naniura hot with steamed rice and sambal for an extra kick.
