Nasi Ayam Hainan (fragrant Chicken Rice)
Nasi Ayam Hainan, or Fragrant Chicken Rice, is a popular Indonesian Chinese dish that features flavorful poached chicken served with fragrant rice and a variety of dipping sauces. This dish is a perfect combination of tender chicken and aromatic rice, making it a comforting and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken, about 3-4 lbs
- 2 cups jasmine rice
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 thumb-sized ginger, sliced
- 2 stalks green onions, chopped
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- 4 cups chicken broth
Instructions
- In a large pot, bring the chicken broth to a boil. Add the whole chicken and cook for 30-40 minutes until fully cooked. Remove the chicken and let it cool. Reserve the chicken broth for cooking the rice.
- Rinse the jasmine rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain the rice and set aside.
- In a separate pot, heat the sesame oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and ginger slices, and sauté until fragrant.
- Add the drained rice to the pot and stir to coat the rice with the aromatic oil. Season with salt and sugar, then pour in 4 cups of the reserved chicken broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.
- While the rice is cooking, debone the cooked chicken and slice it into serving pieces. Serve the chicken with the fragrant rice, garnished with chopped green onions.
