Nellore Fish Curry (nellore Chepala Pulusu)

Ingredients

  • 500g fish (preferably rohu or catla)
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 3-4 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1/4 cup tamarind pulp
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • Coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Marinate the fish with turmeric powder and salt. Set aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few minutes. Then, add green chilies, curry leaves, and chopped tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes turn mushy.
  4. Now, add red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add tamarind pulp and 2 cups of water. Bring it to a boil.
  6. Gently slide in the marinated fish pieces. Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes on medium heat.
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
