Nellore Fish Pilaf (nellore Chepala Pulao)
Nellore Fish Pilaf, also known as Nellore Chepala Pulao, is a flavorful and aromatic rice dish from the Andhra Cuisine of India. This dish is a perfect blend of spices, rice, and fresh fish, creating a delightful one-pot meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450g) fresh fish, cut into pieces
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 4 green chilies, slit
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 4 cups water
- Salt to taste
- 3 tablespoons oil
Instructions
- Wash the basmati rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Marinate the fish pieces with yogurt, turmeric powder, and salt. Let it marinate for 15 minutes.
- Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the green chilies, ginger, and garlic. Sauté for a few minutes.
- Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft.
- Add the marinated fish pieces and cook for 5 minutes.
- Now, add the soaked and drained rice to the pot. Stir gently to mix with the fish and spices.
- Pour in 4 cups of water, add red chili powder, garam masala, and salt to taste. Bring to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the rice and fish are fully cooked.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot.
