Nellore Fish Pilaf (nellore Chepala Pulao)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) fresh fish, cut into pieces
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 4 green chilies, slit
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 tablespoons oil

Instructions

  1. Wash the basmati rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. Marinate the fish pieces with yogurt, turmeric powder, and salt. Let it marinate for 15 minutes.
  3. Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Add the green chilies, ginger, and garlic. Sauté for a few minutes.
  5. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft.
  6. Add the marinated fish pieces and cook for 5 minutes.
  7. Now, add the soaked and drained rice to the pot. Stir gently to mix with the fish and spices.
  8. Pour in 4 cups of water, add red chili powder, garam masala, and salt to taste. Bring to a boil.
  9. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the rice and fish are fully cooked.
  10. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot.
