Ngari Aloo Curry (naga Style Smoked Fish Curry)

Ingredients

  • 200g Ngari (smoked fish)
  • 4 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 tablespoons mustard oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat mustard oil in a pan and add fenugreek seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, sauté for 2 minutes.
  4. Add tomato puree, turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin powder, and coriander powder. Cook until the oil separates.
  5. Add the cubed potatoes and cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Add the smoked fish (ngari) and mix gently. Cook for another 10 minutes.
  7. Add water as per desired consistency and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
