Ngari Bai Imli (fish Curry With Tamarind)
Ngari Bai Imli is a traditional fish curry from Tripuri Cuisine that is known for its tangy and spicy flavors. The combination of tamarind and fish creates a delicious and aromatic dish that is perfect for a hearty meal.
Ingredients
- 500g fish (preferably rohu or catla)
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1/2 cup tamarind pulp
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
- 3-4 tbsp mustard oil
- Salt to taste
- Water
Instructions
- Marinate the fish with turmeric powder and salt. Set aside for 15 minutes.
- Heat mustard oil in a pan and fry the fish until golden brown. Remove and keep aside.
- In the same pan, add fenugreek seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped onions and green chilies. Saute until the onions turn golden brown.
- Now, add the tamarind pulp, red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook for 5 minutes.
- Pour in water to adjust the consistency of the curry. Bring it to a boil.
- Gently slide in the fried fish pieces. Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes on low heat.
- Once the fish is cooked and the curry has thickened, remove from heat.
- Serve hot with steamed rice.
