Ngari Bai Imli (fish Curry With Tamarind)

Ingredients

  • 500g fish (preferably rohu or catla)
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • 1/2 cup tamarind pulp
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 3-4 tbsp mustard oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Water

Instructions

  1. Marinate the fish with turmeric powder and salt. Set aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat mustard oil in a pan and fry the fish until golden brown. Remove and keep aside.
  3. In the same pan, add fenugreek seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Add chopped onions and green chilies. Saute until the onions turn golden brown.
  5. Now, add the tamarind pulp, red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Pour in water to adjust the consistency of the curry. Bring it to a boil.
  7. Gently slide in the fried fish pieces. Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes on low heat.
  8. Once the fish is cooked and the curry has thickened, remove from heat.
  9. Serve hot with steamed rice.
