Nohutlu Toyuq (spiced Chickpea Stew)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb chicken, cut into pieces
  • 1 cup dried chickpeas, soaked overnight
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the chicken pieces and cook until browned on all sides. Remove the chicken from the pot and set aside.
  2. In the same pot, add the chopped onion and cook until softened. Add the minced garlic, diced tomatoes, cumin, paprika, and turmeric. Cook for a few minutes until the spices are fragrant.
  3. Return the chicken to the pot and add the soaked chickpeas and chicken broth. Season with salt and pepper. Bring the stew to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 1 hour, or until the chickpeas are tender and the chicken is cooked through.
  4. Adjust the seasoning if needed and serve the Nohutlu Toyuq hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
