Nonna's Sugo
Nonna's sugo is a classic Italian tomato sauce that is perfect for pasta, meatballs, or as a dipping sauce for bread. This recipe has been passed down through generations and is a staple in our family gatherings.
Ingredients
- 2 cans (28 oz each) whole peeled tomatoes
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Add the whole peeled tomatoes and their juices to the pot. Use a wooden spoon to break up the tomatoes into smaller pieces.
- Stir in the chopped basil, salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve over your favorite pasta or use as a sauce for meatballs.
