Nordic Cabbage Rolls
Nordic Cabbage Rolls, also known as Kaalikääryleet, are a traditional Finnish dish made with cabbage leaves stuffed with a flavorful mixture of ground meat, rice, and spices. This hearty and comforting meal is perfect for a cozy dinner on a cold evening.
Ingredients
- 1 head of cabbage
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup uncooked rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice
- 2 cups beef broth
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Boil a large pot of water and blanch the whole cabbage for 5 minutes. Remove and let it cool.
- In a bowl, mix together the ground beef, rice, onion, egg, salt, pepper, and allspice.
- Carefully peel off the cabbage leaves and place a spoonful of the meat mixture in the center of each leaf. Roll them up and place them in a large pot.
- Pour the beef broth over the cabbage rolls and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 1 hour.
- Serve the cabbage rolls hot with a side of lingonberry sauce.
