Nordic Cabbage Rolls, also known as Kaalikääryleet, are a traditional Finnish dish made with cabbage leaves stuffed with a flavorful mixture of ground meat, rice, and spices. This hearty and comforting meal is perfect for a cozy dinner on a cold evening.

Nordic Cabbage Rolls

Ingredients

  • 1 head of cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup uncooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 2 cups beef broth

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Boil a large pot of water and blanch the whole cabbage for 5 minutes. Remove and let it cool.
  3. In a bowl, mix together the ground beef, rice, onion, egg, salt, pepper, and allspice.
  4. Carefully peel off the cabbage leaves and place a spoonful of the meat mixture in the center of each leaf. Roll them up and place them in a large pot.
  5. Pour the beef broth over the cabbage rolls and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 1 hour.
  6. Serve the cabbage rolls hot with a side of lingonberry sauce.
