Nqaij Qaib Zib Ntsuag (hmong-style Grilled Fish)
Nqaij Qaib Zib Ntsuag, or Hmong-style Grilled Fish, is a traditional dish in Hmong cuisine that is packed with flavor and perfect for a summer barbecue.
Ingredients
- 4 whole fish (such as trout or tilapia), cleaned and gutted
- 1/4 cup fish sauce
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 4 stalks lemongrass, pounded and chopped
- 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
- 1 lime, cut into wedges
Instructions
- Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
- In a small bowl, mix together fish sauce, garlic, sugar, black pepper, and vegetable oil to make the marinade.
- Score the fish on both sides and rub the marinade all over the fish, including inside the cavity.
- Stuff the lemongrass into the cavity of the fish.
- Grill the fish for about 6-8 minutes on each side, or until the flesh is opaque and easily flakes with a fork.
- Remove the fish from the grill and sprinkle with chopped cilantro. Serve with lime wedges.
