Onion Cake (zwiebelkuchen)

Onion Cake (Zwiebelkuchen) is a traditional Austrian dish that is perfect for a cozy evening with friends and family. This savory cake is made with a delicious combination of onions, bacon, and a creamy filling, all baked to golden perfection.

Onion Cake (zwiebelkuchen)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 6 slices bacon, chopped
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon and set aside, leaving the bacon fat in the skillet.
  3. Add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook over medium heat until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, butter, and sour cream to form a dough. Press the dough into the bottom of a greased 9-inch pie dish.
  5. Sprinkle the cooked bacon over the dough.
  6. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk. Pour this mixture over the bacon and onions.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the filling is set and the crust is golden brown.
  8. Let the onion cake cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
