Paiaka Whakarite, also known as Kiwi Venison and Mushroom Pie, is a traditional New Zealand dish that combines the rich flavors of venison with earthy mushrooms in a hearty pie.

Ingredients

  • 500g venison, diced
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 250g mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 sheets of puff pastry

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced venison and cook until browned. Remove the venison from the pan and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook until softened.
  4. Add the sliced mushrooms to the pan and cook until they release their juices.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir to combine.
  6. Pour in the beef stock and red wine, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens.
  7. Return the venison to the pan and season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  8. Transfer the venison and mushroom mixture to a pie dish. Cover with puff pastry and crimp the edges to seal.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.
  10. Serve hot and enjoy!
