Palak Dal (creamy Spinach Dal)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow lentils
  • 4 cups fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  1. Wash the lentils and soak them in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pot and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped onions, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until onions are golden brown.
  3. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft.
  4. Add turmeric, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
  5. Add the soaked lentils and water. Cook until the lentils are soft.
  6. Add chopped spinach and cook for 5 minutes.
  7. Sprinkle garam masala and mix well.
  8. Palak Dal is ready to be served hot with rice or naan.
