Pancake Stew (tuyak Karta)
Pancake Stew, known as Tuyak Karta in Kazakh cuisine, is a hearty and comforting dish that combines the flavors of savory pancakes with a rich and flavorful stew. This dish is perfect for a cozy family dinner or a gathering with friends.
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 2 potatoes, diced
- 1 lb stewing beef, cut into chunks
- 3 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, milk, egg, salt, and black pepper to make the pancake batter. Set aside.
- In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until softened.
- Add the stewing beef to the pot and cook until browned on all sides.
- Stir in the tomato paste, paprika, and dried thyme, then add the beef broth. Bring to a simmer.
- Add the carrots and potatoes to the pot. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes.
- While the stew is simmering, make the pancakes. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and pour a ladle of batter into the skillet. Cook until bubbles form on the surface, then flip and cook the other side. Repeat with the remaining batter.
- Serve the stew in bowls with a pancake on top of each serving. Enjoy!
