Pastel Goreng (indonesian Samosas)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup butter, chilled and diced
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 lb ground beef or chicken
  • 1 potato, peeled and diced
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and diced butter. Use your fingers to rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add water and knead until a smooth dough forms. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground meat and cook until browned. Add the diced potato, carrot, and frozen peas. Stir in the curry powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until the vegetables are tender. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  4. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a thin circle. Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Press the edges to seal.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Fry the pastries in batches until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
