Pastiera Sammarinese (sammarinese Shepherd's Pie)
Pastiera Sammarinese, also known as Sammarinese Shepherd's Pie, is a traditional dish from the small European country of San Marino. This hearty and comforting meal is perfect for a cozy family dinner or a gathering with friends.
Ingredients
- 1 kg ground lamb
- 2 onions, chopped
- 3 carrots, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1.5 kg potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1/2 cup milk
- 4 tbsp butter
Instructions
- In a large skillet, brown the ground lamb over medium heat. Add the onions, carrots, and garlic, and cook until the vegetables are tender.
- Stir in the frozen peas, beef broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, then transfer the mixture to a baking dish.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Boil the potatoes in a large pot of salted water until tender. Drain and mash with the milk and butter until smooth.
- Spoon the mashed potatoes over the lamb mixture in the baking dish, spreading them out evenly with a fork.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- Serve the Pastiera Sammarinese hot and enjoy!
