Pasties are a traditional savory pastry that originated in Cornwall, England. They are a popular handheld meal that is perfect for picnics or on-the-go eating.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 carrot, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add water, tossing with a fork until a dough forms. Shape into a disk, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  3. In a large bowl, mix together the diced onion, potatoes, carrot, and ground beef. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. On a floured surface, roll each portion into a circle.
  5. Place a portion of the filling on one half of each dough circle. Fold the other half over the filling and crimp the edges to seal.
  6. Place the pasties on a baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
