Pastitsio Pleasure
Pastitsio is a traditional Cypriot baked pasta dish that is a true pleasure to make and enjoy. This rich and flavorful dish is a favorite in Cypriot cuisine, and it's perfect for sharing with family and friends.
Ingredients
- 1 lb penne pasta
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 cup red wine
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 4 eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cook the penne pasta according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until the beef is browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes and red wine. Simmer for 10 minutes, then remove from heat.
- In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a roux. Gradually whisk in the milk until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
- In a small bowl, lightly beat the eggs. Gradually whisk in the white sauce until well combined.
- Spread half of the cooked pasta in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Top with the beef mixture, then the remaining pasta.
- Pour the egg and white sauce mixture over the top, then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- Let the pastitsio cool for 10 minutes before serving.
