Pelmeni (siberian Dumplings)
Pelmeni are traditional Siberian dumplings that are a staple in Yamal cuisine. These savory dumplings are filled with a mixture of ground meat and wrapped in a thin dough, then boiled to perfection. They are typically served with a dollop of sour cream or a drizzle of melted butter, making them a comforting and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground meat (beef, pork, or a combination)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, chopped onion, salt, and pepper. Mix well and set aside.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, eggs, and water. Knead the dough until smooth, then let it rest for 15 minutes.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut it into small circles using a cookie cutter or a glass.
- Place a small spoonful of the meat mixture in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling and pinch the edges to seal, creating a semi-circular shape.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Drop the pelmeni into the boiling water and cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
- Remove the pelmeni with a slotted spoon and serve hot with sour cream or melted butter.
