Pepes Pare Pedas (spicy Stuffed Bitter Melon)

Ingredients

  • 2 bitter melons, halved and deseeded
  • 250g mackerel, finely chopped
  • 4 shallots, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 red chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 4 kaffir lime leaves, thinly sliced
  • 4 banana leaves, cut into 8 squares

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the chopped mackerel, shallots, garlic, red chilies, turmeric powder, salt, sugar, and kaffir lime leaves.
  2. Stuff the bitter melon halves with the fish mixture.
  3. Wrap each stuffed bitter melon in a piece of banana leaf and secure with toothpicks.
  4. Steam the wrapped bitter melon for 30 minutes.
  5. Remove from the steamer and let them cool before serving.
