Phaksha Ko Dhal (bhutanese Style Spiced Lentil Curry)
Phaksha Ko Dhal is a traditional Bhutanese style spiced lentil curry that is popular in Sikkimese Cuisine. This hearty and flavorful dish is perfect for a comforting meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup red lentils
- 2 cups water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the red lentils and place them in a pot with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the lentils are soft.
- In a separate pan, heat the vegetable oil and add the cumin seeds. Once they start to sizzle, add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and chopped tomato. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the mixture is well combined.
- Stir in the turmeric, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook for a few minutes to let the spices release their flavors.
- Add the cooked lentils to the spice mixture and stir well. Simmer for another 5-10 minutes, adding water if needed to reach your desired consistency.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice or flatbread.
