Ingredients

  • 1 kg ikan patin (catfish), cleaned and cut into pieces
  • 3 cups water
  • 5 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tomatoes, sliced
  • 3 red chilies, sliced
  • 2 stalks lemongrass, bruised
  • 3 kaffir lime leaves
  • 2 tablespoons tamarind paste
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, bring the water to a boil.
  2. Add the shallots, garlic, tomatoes, red chilies, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Add the tamarind paste, salt, and sugar. Stir well.
  4. Add the fish pieces and cook for 15-20 minutes until the fish is cooked through.
  5. Adjust the seasoning to taste.
  6. Serve hot with steamed rice.
