Ingredients
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 4 tbsp butter
- 6 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices of bread
- 1 cup shredded cheese (Gruyere or Swiss)
Instructions
- In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 30-40 minutes.
- Sprinkle the sugar over the onions and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
- Pour in the beef broth and bring the soup to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Preheat the broiler. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Place a slice of bread on top of each bowl and sprinkle with shredded cheese.
- Place the bowls under the broiler and broil until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.
- Remove from the broiler and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
