Makový koláč, or Poppy Seed Cake, is a traditional Slovak dessert that is popular during the holiday season. This delicious cake is made with a sweet dough and filled with a rich poppy seed filling, creating a delightful combination of flavors and textures.

Poppy Seed Cake (Makový koláč)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 oz active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup ground poppy seeds
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, heat the milk until it is warm but not boiling. Remove from heat and stir in the yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and softened butter. Pour in the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, then place it in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise for 1 hour.
  3. While the dough is rising, prepare the poppy seed filling by mixing the ground poppy seeds, honey, and raisins in a bowl.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the dough into a large rectangle and spread the poppy seed filling evenly over the dough. Roll the dough into a log and place it in a greased baking pan.
  5. Brush the top of the dough with the beaten egg wash. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the cake is golden brown.
  6. Allow the cake to cool before slicing and serving.
