Poronpata (reindeer Stew)
Poronpata, or Reindeer Stew, is a traditional dish from Sami cuisine, made with tender reindeer meat and hearty vegetables. This comforting stew is perfect for cold winter days and is a staple in the diet of the indigenous Sami people of northern Scandinavia.
Ingredients
- 500g reindeer meat, cubed
- 2 onions, chopped
- 3 carrots, sliced
- 3 potatoes, diced
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 liter beef or vegetable broth
Instructions
- Heat a large pot over medium heat and brown the reindeer meat for 5 minutes.
- Add the chopped onions and cook until translucent.
- Stir in the carrots, potatoes, bay leaves, salt, and black pepper.
- Pour in the broth and bring the stew to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Once the meat is tender and the vegetables are cooked, remove the bay leaves and serve the reindeer stew hot.
