Portuguese Custard Tart, also known as Pastel de Nata, is a delicious and iconic Portuguese dessert. These tarts are made with a flaky pastry crust and a creamy custard filling, with a hint of cinnamon on top.

Portuguese Custard Tart (pastel De Nata)

Ingredients

  • 500g puff pastry
  • 400ml whole milk
  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 150g granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Ground cinnamon, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F).
  2. Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into 12 equal squares. Line a muffin tin with the pastry squares, pressing them gently into the bottom and sides.
  3. In a saucepan, heat the milk until it's hot but not boiling.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, flour, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
  6. Pour the custard mixture into the pastry-lined muffin tin, filling each one almost to the top.
  7. Bake for 20 minutes or until the pastry is golden and the custard is set.
  8. Let the tarts cool in the tin for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Before serving, dust the tarts with ground cinnamon.
