Portuguese Custard Tart (pastel De Nata)
Portuguese Custard Tart, also known as Pastel de Nata, is a delicious and iconic Portuguese dessert. These tarts are made with a flaky pastry crust and a creamy custard filling, with a hint of cinnamon on top.
Ingredients
- 500g puff pastry
- 400ml whole milk
- 6 large egg yolks
- 150g granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Ground cinnamon, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F).
- Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into 12 equal squares. Line a muffin tin with the pastry squares, pressing them gently into the bottom and sides.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk until it's hot but not boiling.
- In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, flour, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
- Pour the custard mixture into the pastry-lined muffin tin, filling each one almost to the top.
- Bake for 20 minutes or until the pastry is golden and the custard is set.
- Let the tarts cool in the tin for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Before serving, dust the tarts with ground cinnamon.
