Portuguese Pasteis De Nata
Portuguese Pasteis de Nata is a delicious and iconic custard tart pastry from Portugal. It features a flaky pastry crust filled with a creamy custard filling, often topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon or powdered sugar.
Ingredients
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 6 large egg yolks
- Ground cinnamon or powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
- Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface and cut it into 12 equal squares. Press each square into the cups of a muffin tin, creating a pastry shell.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk until it is hot but not boiling.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, vanilla extract, and egg yolks until smooth.
- Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens into a custard-like consistency.
- Remove the custard from the heat and let it cool slightly.
- Spoon the custard into the prepared puff pastry shells, filling each one about 3/4 full.
- Bake the tarts in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the custard is set and lightly browned on top.
- Remove the tarts from the oven and let them cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cooled, dust the tarts with ground cinnamon or powdered sugar before serving.
