Portuguese Pasteis De Nata

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 6 large egg yolks
  • Ground cinnamon or powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface and cut it into 12 equal squares. Press each square into the cups of a muffin tin, creating a pastry shell.
  3. In a saucepan, heat the milk until it is hot but not boiling.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, vanilla extract, and egg yolks until smooth.
  5. Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
  6. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens into a custard-like consistency.
  7. Remove the custard from the heat and let it cool slightly.
  8. Spoon the custard into the prepared puff pastry shells, filling each one about 3/4 full.
  9. Bake the tarts in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the custard is set and lightly browned on top.
  10. Remove the tarts from the oven and let them cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Once cooled, dust the tarts with ground cinnamon or powdered sugar before serving.
