Potato Meat Curry, also known as Aloo Gosht, is a classic Pakistani dish that combines tender meat with flavorful spices and hearty potatoes. This comforting and aromatic curry is a staple in Pakistani cuisine and is perfect for a satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 500g mutton or beef, cut into pieces
- 3 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 tomatoes, pureed
- 1/4 cup oil
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- 2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Heat oil in a large pot and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few minutes until the raw smell disappears.
- Now add the meat pieces and brown them on all sides.
- Stir in the tomato puree, red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the masala.
- Whisk the yogurt and add it to the pot, stirring continuously to avoid curdling.
- Add enough water to cover the meat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until the meat is tender, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
- Add the cubed potatoes and garam masala. Cook until the potatoes are tender and the curry reaches your desired consistency.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with naan or rice.

Serving suggestions
Aloo Gosht pairs well with steamed basmati rice or warm naan bread. You can also serve it with a side of cucumber raita for a refreshing contrast to the spicy curry.
Tips & tricks
For a richer flavor, you can use ghee instead of oil for cooking the curry. Additionally, marinating the meat in yogurt and spices for a few hours before cooking can enhance the taste and tenderness of the dish.
