Prawns Shallots Curry (chemmeen Ulli Theeyal)
Prawns Shallots Curry, also known as Chemmeen Ulli Theeyal, is a traditional dish from the Kerala Cuisine. This flavorful and aromatic curry is made with prawns, shallots, and a blend of spices, creating a delicious and comforting meal.
Ingredients
- 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
- 10-12 shallots, thinly sliced
- 1 tsp ginger, minced
- 1 tsp garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 2-3 dried red chilies
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1 cup grated coconut
- Tamarind pulp, as needed
- Salt, to taste
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
Instructions
- Heat coconut oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, dried red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté until the seeds splutter.
- Add sliced shallots, ginger, and garlic. Sauté until the shallots turn golden brown.
- Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, and red chili powder. Sauté for a minute.
- Add grated coconut and continue to sauté until it turns golden brown.
- Grind the sautéed mixture into a fine paste after it cools down.
- In the same pan, add the ground paste, tamarind pulp, and salt. Cook for a few minutes.
- Add the cleaned prawns and cook until they are done.
- Simmer for a few more minutes until the curry reaches the desired consistency.
- Garnish with curry leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
