Prawns Shallots Curry, also known as Chemmeen Ulli Theeyal, is a traditional dish from the Kerala Cuisine. This flavorful and aromatic curry is made with prawns, shallots, and a blend of spices, creating a delicious and comforting meal.

Prawns Shallots Curry (chemmeen Ulli Theeyal)

Ingredients

  • 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 10-12 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp ginger, minced
  • 1 tsp garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2-3 dried red chilies
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • Tamarind pulp, as needed
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Heat coconut oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, dried red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté until the seeds splutter.
  2. Add sliced shallots, ginger, and garlic. Sauté until the shallots turn golden brown.
  3. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, and red chili powder. Sauté for a minute.
  4. Add grated coconut and continue to sauté until it turns golden brown.
  5. Grind the sautéed mixture into a fine paste after it cools down.
  6. In the same pan, add the ground paste, tamarind pulp, and salt. Cook for a few minutes.
  7. Add the cleaned prawns and cook until they are done.
  8. Simmer for a few more minutes until the curry reaches the desired consistency.
  9. Garnish with curry leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
