Qaspeq (berry-stuffed Fry Bread)
Qaspeq, or Berry-Stuffed Fry Bread, is a traditional Yup'ik dish that combines the sweetness of berries with the savory goodness of fry bread. This delightful treat is perfect for breakfast, dessert, or any time you're craving a delicious and comforting snack.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add water and knead the dough until smooth. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
- Meanwhile, in another bowl, mix the berries and sugar. Set aside.
- Divide the dough into 4 equal parts. Flatten each part into a circle, place a spoonful of the berry mixture in the center, and fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape. Press the edges to seal.
- In a skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Fry the stuffed dough until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
