Qeema Bamia (iraqi Lamb And Chickpea Stew)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lamb, cubed
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups chicken or beef broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
  2. Add the cubed lamb to the pot and cook until it's browned on all sides.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander, turmeric, and cinnamon. Cook for a few minutes until the spices become fragrant.
  4. Add the diced tomatoes, chickpeas, and broth to the pot. Season with salt and pepper, then bring the stew to a simmer.
  5. Cover the pot and let the stew cook for about 1 hour, or until the lamb is tender.
