Qeema Curry (iraqi Lamb Kofta Curry)

Ingredients

  • 500g ground lamb
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 can (400g) diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground lamb, onion, garlic, cumin, coriander, turmeric, cayenne pepper, cilantro, parsley, salt, and black pepper. Form the mixture into small meatballs.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the diced tomatoes, broth, and coconut milk. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
  5. Serve the Qeema Curry hot with rice or bread.
