Raw Fish Salad (tongan Ota Ika)

Raw Fish Salad, also known as Tongan Ota Ika, is a traditional Oceanic dish that features fresh fish marinated in citrus juices and mixed with vegetables and coconut cream. This refreshing and flavorful salad is perfect for a light and healthy meal.

Raw Fish Salad (tongan Ota Ika)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh fish fillets, such as snapper or tuna
  • 1 cup lime juice
  • 1 cup coconut cream
  • 1 cucumber, diced
  • 1 tomato, diced
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1-2 chili peppers, finely chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Place the fish fillets in a bowl and pour the lime juice over them. Make sure the fish is completely covered in the juice. Let it marinate for about 10-15 minutes until the fish turns opaque and "cooked" in the acidity of the lime juice.
  2. Once the fish is "cooked" in the lime juice, drain off the excess liquid.
  3. Add the coconut cream, cucumber, tomato, onion, and chili peppers to the fish. Gently toss to combine all the ingredients.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Refrigerate the salad for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  6. Serve the Tongan Ota Ika chilled, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
