Raw Fish Salad (tongan Ota Ika)
Raw Fish Salad, also known as Tongan Ota Ika, is a traditional Oceanic dish that features fresh fish marinated in citrus juices and mixed with vegetables and coconut cream. This refreshing and flavorful salad is perfect for a light and healthy meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb fresh fish fillets, such as snapper or tuna
- 1 cup lime juice
- 1 cup coconut cream
- 1 cucumber, diced
- 1 tomato, diced
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 1-2 chili peppers, finely chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Place the fish fillets in a bowl and pour the lime juice over them. Make sure the fish is completely covered in the juice. Let it marinate for about 10-15 minutes until the fish turns opaque and "cooked" in the acidity of the lime juice.
- Once the fish is "cooked" in the lime juice, drain off the excess liquid.
- Add the coconut cream, cucumber, tomato, onion, and chili peppers to the fish. Gently toss to combine all the ingredients.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Refrigerate the salad for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Serve the Tongan Ota Ika chilled, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
