Reindeer Stew (Poronkäristys)
Poronkäristys, or Reindeer Stew, is a traditional dish from the Yamal Cuisine of the indigenous Nenets people in the Yamal Peninsula of Russia. This hearty stew is made with tender reindeer meat and is packed with rich flavors, making it a perfect comfort food for cold winter days.
Ingredients
- 500g reindeer meat, thinly sliced
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1 cup water
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the thinly sliced onions and cook until they are soft and translucent.
- Add the thinly sliced reindeer meat to the pot and cook until it is browned on all sides.
- Pour in the water and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the stew simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Once the meat is tender and the flavors have melded, remove the pot from the heat.
- Serve the Poronkäristys hot, accompanied by mashed potatoes or lingonberry sauce.
