Ingredients

  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cups Rheinhessen wine
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, toss the beef chunks with flour until evenly coated.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the beef chunks and brown on all sides. Remove the beef and set aside.
  3. Lower the heat to medium, add the chopped onion, carrots, celery, and garlic to the Dutch oven. Cook until the vegetables are softened.
  4. Return the beef to the Dutch oven and pour in the Rheinhessen wine and beef broth. Add the bay leaves and dried thyme. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Bring the liquid to a simmer, then cover and let it braise for 2.5 to 3 hours, or until the beef is tender.
  6. Remove the bay leaves and adjust the seasoning if needed. Serve the Rheinhessisches Wein-Braised Beef hot, with the braising liquid spooned over the meat.
