Rice And Lentil Porridge (khicede)
Rice and Lentil Porridge, also known as Khicede, is a traditional dish from Odia Cuisine that is nutritious, comforting, and easy to prepare.
Ingredients
- 1 cup rice
- 1/2 cup lentils
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups water
- 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
Instructions
- Wash the rice and lentils together and soak them for 15-20 minutes.
- Heat ghee in a pot and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions, ginger, and garlic. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
- Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
- Drain the soaked rice and lentils and add them to the pot. Sauté for 2-3 minutes.
- Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Then, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the rice and lentils are cooked and the porridge reaches the desired consistency.
- Adjust the seasoning if needed and serve hot.
