Ridge Gourd Dal (beerakaya Pappu)
Ridge Gourd Dal, also known as Beerakaya Pappu in Telugu, is a traditional and flavorful lentil-based dish from the Telugu Cuisine. This dish is a staple in many South Indian households and is known for its simplicity and nutritious value.
Ingredients
- 1 cup split pigeon peas (toor dal)
- 2 cups ridge gourd (beerakaya), peeled and chopped
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 4-5 green chilies, slit
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- A few curry leaves
- 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 inch ginger, finely chopped
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Wash the toor dal and pressure cook with 3 cups of water, turmeric powder, and salt until soft.
- Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and asafoetida. Once the seeds splutter, add curry leaves, green chilies, minced garlic, and ginger. Sauté for a minute.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Add the chopped ridge gourd and cook for 5-7 minutes until it becomes soft.
- Mash the cooked toor dal and add it to the pan. Mix well.
- Add red chili powder and adjust salt as needed. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
