Ridge Gourd Dal (beerakaya Pappu)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup split pigeon peas (toor dal)
  • 2 cups ridge gourd (beerakaya), peeled and chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 4-5 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • A few curry leaves
  • 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash the toor dal and pressure cook with 3 cups of water, turmeric powder, and salt until soft.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and asafoetida. Once the seeds splutter, add curry leaves, green chilies, minced garlic, and ginger. Sauté for a minute.
  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  5. Add the chopped ridge gourd and cook for 5-7 minutes until it becomes soft.
  6. Mash the cooked toor dal and add it to the pan. Mix well.
  7. Add red chili powder and adjust salt as needed. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  8. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
