Romanian Apple Cake (Plăcintă cu Mere)
Plăcintă cu Mere is a traditional Romanian apple cake that is perfect for any occasion. This delicious dessert is made with a flaky pastry crust and a sweet apple filling, making it a favorite among both kids and adults.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, cold butter, sour cream, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix until the dough comes together. Divide the dough in half and wrap each half in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- In a separate bowl, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar and cinnamon until well coated.
- Roll out one half of the chilled dough on a floured surface to fit the bottom of the cake pan. Place the rolled dough in the bottom of the pan and sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the dough.
- Arrange the apple slices over the breadcrumbs in an even layer.
- Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the apples. Pinch the edges to seal the cake.
- Brush the top of the cake with the beaten egg wash.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
- Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
