Royal Peas and Cottage Cheese (Shahi Matar Paneer) is a classic Mughlai dish that combines the sweetness of peas with the richness of cottage cheese in a creamy and aromatic gravy.
Ingredients
- 1 cup cottage cheese (paneer), cubed
- 1 cup peas
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, pureed
- 1/2 cup cashew nuts, soaked and ground to a paste
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter) or oil
- Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute. Then, add the tomato puree and cook until the oil separates.
- Stir in the cashew paste, garam masala, turmeric powder, red chili powder, sugar, and salt. Cook for a few minutes.
- Add the peas and cook for 5 minutes. Then, add the cubed cottage cheese and mix gently.
- Pour in the heavy cream and simmer for 5-7 minutes until the gravy thickens.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves and serve hot with naan or rice.
