Ingredients

  • 3 cups rye flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add the rye flour and salt to the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place the loaf on a greased baking sheet, cover, and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the bread for 35-40 minutes until it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  7. Let the bread cool before slicing and serving.
