Samak Mashwi (yemenite Spiced Fish With Zhoug)
Samak Mashwi is a traditional Yemenite dish of spiced grilled fish, typically served with zhoug, a fiery green herb sauce. This dish is bursting with flavor and is a staple in Mizrahi Jewish cuisine.
Ingredients
- 4 fish fillets (such as red snapper or grouper)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic
- 2 green chilies, chopped
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
- In a small bowl, mix together 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon coriander, 1/2 teaspoon paprika, salt, and pepper. Rub the spice mixture onto the fish fillets.
- Grill the fish for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the fish is cooked through and has grill marks.
- While the fish is grilling, prepare the zhoug. In a food processor, combine the parsley, cilantro, garlic, green chilies, 1 teaspoon cumin, 1/2 teaspoon cardamom, 1/4 cup olive oil, lemon juice, and salt. Blend until smooth.
- Serve the grilled fish with a generous dollop of zhoug on top.
