Samaki wa Nazi, or Swahili Coconut Fish Curry, is a popular dish in Tanzanian cuisine. This flavorful and aromatic curry is made with fresh fish, coconut milk, and a blend of spices that create a delicious and comforting meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450g) fresh fish fillets
- 1 can (14 oz) coconut milk
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp ginger, grated
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp coriander
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- In a large pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until the onion is soft and translucent.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they are soft and pulpy.
- Stir in the turmeric, cumin, coriander, and chili powder. Cook for 1-2 minutes to toast the spices.
- Pour in the coconut milk and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
- Add the fish fillets to the pan and gently simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through.
- Season with salt to taste.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice or chapati.
