Samosa ya Nyama, or Swahili Beef Samosas, are a popular Tanzanian snack that is perfect for any occasion. These savory pastries are filled with a spiced beef mixture and then deep-fried to crispy perfection. They are great for serving as appetizers or as a delicious snack.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 20 samosa wrappers
- Vegetable oil for deep-frying
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat 2 tbsp of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, and sauté until the onions are soft and translucent.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in the ground cumin, ground coriander, turmeric, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool.
- Take one samosa wrapper and place it on a clean surface. Spoon a heaping tablespoon of the beef mixture onto the center of the wrapper.
- Moisten the edges of the wrapper with water, then fold the wrapper over the filling to create a triangle. Press the edges to seal the samosa.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the samosas in batches and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Remove the samosas from the oil and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with your favorite chutney or dipping sauce.
