Samsa is a popular Uyghur meat pie that is commonly enjoyed in Xinjiang, China. It is a delicious savory pastry filled with seasoned meat and onions, wrapped in a flaky pastry crust.

Samsa (uyghur Meat Pie)

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground lamb or beef
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 package of puff pastry sheets

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground meat, chopped onions, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the meat mixture and cook until the meat is browned and the onions are soft. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Roll out the puff pastry sheets and cut them into 6-inch squares.
  5. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each pastry square. Fold the pastry over the filling to form a triangle and crimp the edges to seal.
  6. Place the samsas on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Serve the samsas hot and enjoy!
